History of Nutrihub
ICAR-IIMR with World Bank support partnered with industry giant ITC, they embarked on a journey for reviving the demand for millets in India. ICAR-IIMR recognized the need for a holistic approach and brought together a consortium of stakeholders - farmers, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), industry leaders, state millet missions, and even upcoming entrepreneurs. This collaborative spirit was key to the success.
The journey began with empowering 3,000 farmers with the knowledge and support to cultivate millets based on specific end-product demands. This ensured not only quality crops but also maximized yield and income potential for the farmers.
But cultivation was just one part of the journey. ICAR-IIMR, in collaboration with PJTSAU (Erstwhile ANGRAU), addressed the processing bottleneck through developed and standardized innovative technologies to create a wider variety of millet-based, value-added products. This eliminated the traditional processing inconveniences and paved the way for a more consumer-friendly millet experience.
To ensure the health and nutritional assurance, ICAR-IIMR partnered with NIN to conduct a clinical trial for evaluation and certification. This established the undeniable nutritional superiority of millet food products compared to other cereals.
With a strong foundation laid, ICAR-IIMR now turned its focus to market creation through commercialization which witnessed a landmark decision – the launch of "eatrite, a brand owned by ICAR-IIMR. This pilot commercialization in Hyderabad proved the viability of millet-based products and paved the way for wider market acceptance.
But market creation wasn't enough. ICAR-IIMR understood the need for sustained demand and hence adopted promotion & popularization by spearheading nationwide awareness campaigns. This highlighted the nutritional and health benefits of millets, educating consumers and creating a positive perception towards the millet consumption.
The last mile connectivity for taking the millets to the consumers was still far from reality. This led to the establishment of Nutrihub, TBI with a focus on entrepreneurship development nurturing a new generation of millet entrepreneurs. It provided aspiring entrepreneurs with the resources and support to develop innovative millet-based products, creating a range of products and services under numerous brands in the country.
Further, Nutrihub recognized the importance of policy advocacy and hence involved active national and international millet promotion initiatives alongside technological backstopping to state millet missions, ensuring a integrated approach towards mainstreaming millets in the country.
Nutrihub, is a proven model of success through collaboration, innovation, and empowerment. Today it caters to all the needs of the stakeholders in the millet ecosystem which has led to its outreach in more than 13 states and virtually connecting hundreds of millet start-ups in the country.
